“Average Joe” spent its first season turning an ordinary Pittsburgh plumber’s life into an increasingly absurd crime nightmare. Season 2 decides Pittsburgh is no longer big enough for Joe Washington’s problems. After another threat connected to his father’s criminal past puts his family in danger, Joe, Leon, Cathy and Touch follow the trail all the way to Cape Town, where assassins, bounty hunters and a powerful local crime boss are waiting for them. Deon Cole returns as Joe, with Malcolm Barrett, Cynthia Kaye McWilliams and Michael Trucco back beside him.
The change in geography is genuine. While Season 1 used Atlanta to stand in for Pittsburgh, Season 2 was principally filmed in Cape Town, South Africa. Early production listings mentioned both Atlanta and South Africa, but the actual production moved away from its former Georgia base. Creator Robb Cullen confirmed that cameras began rolling in Cape Town in February 2025, and the cast remained there through the May wrap.
Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town is not pretending to be another international city for most of Season 2. It plays itself.
Paramount+ describes the new storyline as taking Joe and his friends from Pittsburgh to Cape Town, where they become involved with international criminals and discover more about Joe’s family history. South African production company Advantage Entertainment, which worked on the season locally, likewise confirms Cape Town as the setting and production location.
That creates a noticeable visual change from Season 1. Atlanta’s suburban streets and neighborhoods were framed to suggest western Pennsylvania, while Cape Town gives the second season a combination of mountains, dense city streets, coastal scenery and more open landscapes.

Deon Cole later said Cape Town itself became an important part of the experience, praising the support the production received from local residents. The series also expanded its South African cast, bringing in Katlego Lebogang as Imani and Hakeem Kae-Kazim as Cape Town crime boss Sipho.

Table Mountain
One location can be confirmed much more specifically: Table Mountain.
On February 21, 2025, creator Robb Cullen posted from the top of Table Mountain while Season 2 was shooting, describing the production as being above the clouds. That provides direct production evidence linking Cape Town’s best-known natural landmark to the filming period.
Table Mountain is useful for more than an obligatory establishing shot. The mountain dominates Cape Town’s geography, appearing behind neighborhoods and roads from numerous parts of the city. Using the real location lets the series immediately establish that Joe and his friends have travelled far beyond the world they knew in Pittsburgh.

The production has not released a detailed scene list identifying which Table Mountain paths, lookout points or facilities appear in each episode. It is therefore safer to identify the mountain itself rather than attach individual sequences to unconfirmed spots.
Cape Town Streets and Urban Locations
A significant part of Season 2 was filmed on real Cape Town streets and urban locations, although the production has not published an address-by-address location sheet.
Paramount’s promotional material repeatedly emphasizes Joe and his friends being hunted “across the city,” and official footage shows the characters moving through storefronts, roads and built-up areas rather than remaining on studio sets. Director and executive producer Eric Dean Seaton later said the production worked hard to showcase Cape Town’s culture and beauty.
That broader city filming also explains why the second season feels considerably larger. Cape Town can move quickly from central business districts to older commercial streets, wealthy residential areas and dramatic coastal terrain. The show can consequently stage a chase, criminal meeting and quiet character scene in visually different surroundings while staying within the same metropolitan region.
Specific neighborhoods such as Bo-Kaap, Woodstock or Sea Point have not been reliably confirmed by the producers. They should not be added to the location map merely because a building or street in the finished episodes resembles them.

Was Season 2 Filmed in Atlanta?
This is where the production history becomes slightly confusing.
Early production tracking listed Atlanta, Georgia, and South Africa as the locations for Season 2 and initially placed the start of filming in January 2025. That information appears to reflect an earlier production plan.
By July 2024, however, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that the show was moving its Season 2 production from Atlanta to South Africa. That is consistent with what happened once filming actually began. Cullen announced the first day of shooting from Cape Town on February 7, 2025, after two months of preparation there.
Michael Trucco also announced the Season 2 wrap from Cape Town in May. Director Eric Dean Seaton described the production as involving 70 shooting days and 25 night shoots, further reinforcing South Africa as the season’s substantial production base rather than a brief overseas unit.
There is currently no equally strong evidence showing a major Season 2 photography unit operating in Atlanta.
That matters because the story still begins with material connected to Pittsburgh. Since neither Pittsburgh nor a significant Atlanta shoot has been publicly documented for the completed season, some American-set material appears to have been recreated within the South African production. A small pickup unit elsewhere cannot be ruled out, but it has not been publicly confirmed.

When Was Average Joe Season 2 Filmed?
The actual Season 2 shoot began on February 7, 2025, when Cullen confirmed that production had started in Cape Town. Filming continued for roughly three months before wrapping around May 13, 2025, when Trucco celebrated the completion of the season with the South African cast and crew.
Seaton’s production recap gives a better sense of the scale than those dates alone. He recorded 70 shooting days, including 25 nights and numerous double-up days, following months of preparation. This was not a short Cape Town excursion inserted into an Atlanta production. South Africa became the working home of the season.
Why Season 2 Looks So Different
Moving production to Cape Town solves two problems at once. The story genuinely sends Joe to South Africa, so the landscape does not need to be disguised for the season’s main storyline. At the same time, Cape Town offers the crews enough architectural variety to handle interiors, urban action and any material that needs a less obviously South African appearance.
It also gives “Average Joe” a much-needed visual escalation. Season 1’s joke was watching regular suburban people stumble into Russian mob violence. Season 2 takes those same people halfway around the world and drops them into a city they do not understand.
That makes Cape Town more than a production bargain or attractive background. Table Mountain, the city’s streets and its distinctly South African scale visually announce that Joe’s problems have become international. Season 1 may have been made in Atlanta, but Season 2 belongs very clearly to Cape Town.
