Hallmark’s Five Gold Rings Filming Locations and Cast Details

Winnipeg’s Transcona neighborhood served as the production base for “Five Gold Rings” during early July 2024, with crews installing fake snow, fairy lights and decorated Christmas trees on real commercial storefronts to stand in for a fictional Minnesota small town. Holland Roden and Nolan Gerard Funk lead the cast. The movie premiered November 7, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET on Hallmark Mystery as part of the network’s Miracles of Christmas event, and was available on Peacock within 72 hours of the linear broadcast.

What Five Gold Rings Is About

Audrey Moss (Roden), a painter based in New York City, returns to her small Minnesota hometown for the holidays after her grandmother dies. She finds five gold rings with a handwritten note asking her to return each one to its rightful owner before Christmas morning, nine days away. To trace those owners she recruits Finn O’Sullivan (Funk), a childhood friend who now works in the area as a private investigator. Their search moves through neighborhood visits, a gingerbread house competition and a local fundraiser called the Giving Gala. A romance develops alongside the quest.

The screenplay carries a story credit for Aloura Melissa Charles and a co-teleplay credit shared between Charles and John Christian Plummer. Plummer wrote all seven films in Hallmark’s Mystery 101 series as well as early entries in the Curious Caterer and Francesca Quinn, PI mystery strands. Steven R. Monroe directed.

Hallmark Mystery’s official synopsis describes Audrey’s destination only as her “small Minnesota hometown.”

Where Five Gold Rings Was Filmed

All principal photography took place in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The production concentrated its exterior work in Transcona, the city’s east-end neighborhood. Transcona operated as its own municipality until 1972, when it was formally amalgamated into the City of Winnipeg, and its compact main street gives it the visual character of a standalone community.

The primary exterior set was on Regent Avenue West. Crews dressed the block around 130 Regent Avenue West, home to All About Computers Inc., and extended the Christmas treatment to neighboring businesses including Kehler Realty and Tony Fernandez Signature Shoe Repair. The storefronts were outlined in fairy lights, the sidewalks received artificial snow and trees were placed outside the shops. The crew repeated similar dressing at several other Transcona locations to cover the multiple shops and houses Audrey and Finn visit across the story.

Transcona’s distinct identity as a former independent town and its compact street layout provided a closer visual match for the fictional Minnesota small town than a downtown Winnipeg location would have offered.

Filming Christmas in Summer Heat

Because principal photography ran in early July, the cast wore winter wardrobe in midsummer temperatures. Daina Leitold, who plays antique shop rival Diana Trank, described the experience in a social media post quoted by entertainment site The Cinemaholic: “Filming Christmas in July can be challenging, with sweaty bike rides to and from and sweaty times outdoors in winter wear.” She added that working on set in high heels compounded the difficulty. Leitold also wrote that her character became known on set as “Dirty Diana.”

Cast of Five Gold Rings

Holland Roden plays Audrey Moss. Her best-known credit is Lydia Martin in MTV’s “Teen Wolf,” which ran for six seasons between 2011 and 2017. The cast later reunited for a feature continuation that Paramount+ released in 2023. Roden’s Hallmark credits include the 2022 Hallmark Mystery film “Time for Him to Come Home for Christmas,” the 2023 Hallmark Channel summer movie “Making Waves” and the 2024 Hallmark Mystery film “Tipline Mysteries: Dial 1 for Murder.”

Nolan Gerard Funk plays Finn O’Sullivan. Funk, who grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia, played Collin Jennings across 16 episodes of MTV’s “Awkward” in seasons 3 and 5, appeared as Hunter Clarington in “Glee” and served as a series regular on the HBO Max dark comedy series “The Flight Attendant” as FBI agent Van White. That role earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for outstanding ensemble in a comedy series in 2021. He was also a series regular on the Starz drama “Counterpart” and Netflix’s “Partner Track.” “Five Gold Rings” is his first Hallmark credit.

The supporting cast, per TV Guide’s full crew listing, includes Kristen Harris as Siobhan, Reena Jolly as Lexi, Henriette Ivanans as Kay Miller (Audrey’s mother), Suzanne Pringle as Elizabeth Shepherd, Myla Volk as Young Audrey, Susan Loewen as Jenny O’Sullivan, Kevin McIntyre as Frank Kennedy Jr., Josh Strait as Josh, Jason Soltys as Jerome and Felix Montgomery as Charlie. Anthony Fankhauser produced, Greg Nicod handled cinematography and Taylor Swindells composed the score.

John Christian Plummer’s co-writing credit carries practical information for viewers who found the ring quest more procedurally organized than a typical Hallmark holiday romance. Plummer built the Mystery 101 series around sequential detection rather than using the investigative elements as decoration for a love story. Our reading is that “Five Gold Rings” applies the same structural logic: the Giving Gala sequence functions as a discrete investigative checkpoint rather than a backdrop for romance, and the nine-day countdown frames each ring’s resolution as a numbered case. That structure puts it closer to a procedural mystery with a holiday backdrop than to a romantic comedy that happens to include a scavenger hunt.
