My Brilliant Career Filming Locations

Netflix’s My Brilliant Career returns to Miles Franklin’s celebrated story without trying to recreate Gillian Armstrong’s 1979 film shot for shot. Developed and written by Liz Doran, the six-part series follows Sybylla Melvyn, a fiercely independent young woman living in Australia around the turn of the 20th century. Sybylla wants to become a writer, even as the people around her keep presenting marriage as the safer and more respectable future. Philippa Northeast plays Sybylla, with Christopher Chung as Harry, the wealthy young man who complicates her determination to remain independent.

That rural Australian world was created entirely in South Australia. Rather than concentrating filming around a single historic estate, the production moved between studio sets in Adelaide, grand Victorian homes, farmland near the Barossa and the South East around Penola. The result gives Sybylla’s changing circumstances their own geography, from modest country life to the imposing houses and manicured grounds associated with wealth.

Where was My Brilliant Career Filmed?

Adelaide Studios

Adelaide Studios in Glenside served as the production’s principal studio base. The South Australian Film Corporation confirmed before filming that the Netflix series would use its studio complex while also shooting extensively across the state.

The facility gave production designer Felicity Abbott and her team somewhere to construct the interiors that could not simply be found ready-made inside a heritage property. Period drawing rooms, bedrooms and other controlled interior environments could be built and lit there while exterior sequences were captured at real South Australian estates. Contemporary location reporting identifies Adelaide Studios as the home of many of the show’s elaborate interiors.

That combination is particularly useful for a series set around 1900. A beautiful Victorian house may look perfect from outside while still containing modern wiring, utilities or altered rooms that make extended filming difficult. Studio construction allows those spaces to feel historically consistent without placing unnecessary restrictions on the camera.

Para Para Mansion, Gawler West

One of the show’s most striking real properties is Para Para Mansion in Gawler West, north of central Adelaide. The Town of Gawler has confirmed that the historic mansion appears in My Brilliant Career, making it one of the clearest publicly identified filming sites connected to the production.

Para Para’s elaborate 19th-century architecture, gardens and extensive grounds suit the social world Sybylla encounters once she moves beyond her family’s financially strained existence. The series uses the estate for scenes involving society gatherings and the rituals of the wealthier class. Its lawns provide a naturally convincing setting for outdoor teas and social events without requiring the production to manufacture an aristocratic country estate from scratch.

The mansion is especially effective because its grandeur tells part of the story before anyone speaks. Sybylla is attracted to the freedom that money appears to provide, but those elegant environments also carry the expectations she is trying to escape.

Yallum Park, Penola

The production travelled much farther south for Yallum Park, the heritage-listed homestead outside Penola. ABC reported directly from the area while filming was underway in 2025, confirming that Netflix had established production at the 1878 property.

Yallum Park becomes Caddagat, the home of Sybylla’s grandmother, Mrs Bossier, played by Anna Chancellor. The two-storey Victorian residence, its park-like gardens and coach house provide exactly the kind of prosperous country estate Franklin’s story requires.

Unlike a brief establishing location, Yallum Park appears to have been a substantial production base. Filming brought cast and crew into the Penola district for weeks, with local accommodation providers, cafes and other businesses reporting increased activity during the shoot.

There is also a pleasing historical logic to using the real house. Its architecture already belongs close to the period being depicted, allowing the production to work with original proportions, verandas and interiors rather than simply dressing a modern property to look old.

Southern Barossa

Not all of My Brilliant Career could take place inside grand houses. Sybylla’s relationship with the land is just as important, and the production used the Southern Barossa region for its broad rural landscapes. The SAFC specifically confirms the Southern Barossa among the areas transformed for filming.

Rolling farmland, open paddocks and agricultural country gave the series the scale it needed for horse riding, farm work and journeys between properties. The production did not publicly release a complete list of individual Barossa farms, so the broader regional designation is more accurate than attaching every countryside scene to a specific estate.

Those landscapes also stop the adaptation from feeling like a costume drama confined to drawing rooms. Sybylla’s rebellion makes more sense against a world that looks physically expansive even while the social choices available to her remain frustratingly narrow.

Pine Hill

Pine Hill, South Australia, is also listed in current production-location records and secondary filming guides as one of the rural areas used by the series. Its open countryside reportedly contributed additional pastoral material used to create turn-of-the-century farming country.

There is less primary documentation for Pine Hill than there is for Yallum Park, Adelaide Studios or the Southern Barossa. Netflix and the SAFC have so far identified the broader South Australian regions rather than publishing a complete Pine Hill scene breakdown. It is therefore safest to describe Pine Hill as a reported filming location, rather than assigning specific scenes to it without stronger confirmation.

When Was My Brilliant Career Filmed?

Production was underway by June 2025 and continued through the Australian winter before wrapping in August. Northeast later described the production as an unusually demanding shoot in which she appeared throughout the six episodes and did not have a filming day off.

The scale of the production grew beyond the early estimates released while cameras were rolling. At the series’ worldwide launch on August 13, 2026, the SAFC said My Brilliant Career ultimately generated an anticipated AUD $19 million in direct South Australian production spending, employed about 600 South Australians across cast, crew, creatives and extras, and worked with 410 local businesses.

That investment is visible in the finished geography. Instead of asking one estate to represent every level of Sybylla’s world, My Brilliant Career moves through several distinct versions of South Australia. Adelaide provides the controlled interiors, Para Para supplies social grandeur, Yallum Park becomes the heart of Caddagat, and the Barossa and South East give Sybylla the enormous countryside against which she is trying to imagine a life of her own.
