“The Copycat Killer” puts Dr. Eleanor “Ellie” Douglas back inside the kind of investigation she had tried to leave behind. The criminal profiler became famous for helping capture the Sigil Slayer, but the case also left her deeply traumatized and increasingly withdrawn from public life. Her reluctant appearance at a true crime conference goes badly wrong when a fan is murdered using the same signature associated with her old case. With a possible copycat on the loose and evidence beginning to point toward Ellie herself, the profiler has to understand why someone is recreating the past before the investigation destroys her life.
Jim Donovan directed the Lifetime thriller from a screenplay by Al Kratina. Although the story moves through conference spaces, police environments, a prison and Ellie’s private life, the production did not need to travel between several cities to create them. “The Copycat Killer” was filmed in Ottawa, Ontario, during a short shoot in the spring of 2026.
Ottawa, Ontario
Ottawa was the principal filming location for “The Copycat Killer.” Production records place the movie in the Canadian capital beginning May 25, 2026, and ACTRA Ottawa lists filming through June 5. That gives the television movie a production window of less than two weeks, which is a compact schedule even by made-for-TV thriller standards.
The city gives filmmakers several very different environments within a relatively small production radius. Ottawa has dense commercial areas, government and institutional architecture, older residential neighborhoods and quieter suburban streets. That variety is particularly useful for a mystery such as “The Copycat Killer,” where Ellie moves between professional settings and places that are supposed to feel much more private.

The movie’s story includes a true crime conference that forces Ellie back into public view. It also brings her face-to-face with Glenn Boyd, the killer connected to the original case, requiring a convincing institutional or prison environment. Other portions revolve around the investigation itself and Ellie’s increasingly unsafe personal world. Ottawa allowed the production to create those contrasting spaces without relocating the company elsewhere.
No reliable production record I found identifies the actual building used for the conference, the property representing Ellie’s residence or the location that doubled for the prison. Those sites may become identifiable after viewers compare the completed movie with Ottawa landmarks, but they should not currently be presented as confirmed filming locations.

Eastern Ontario
Production listings describe Ottawa and Eastern Ontario as the base for the shoot. Ottawa sits in a region that has become particularly active for television movies because filmmakers can move quickly between urban and less developed surroundings. Productions can find city streets, detached houses, wooded properties and institutional buildings without the logistical demands of moving to another province.
That flexibility suits “The Copycat Killer.” The film is not a spectacle that needs recognizable landmarks. Its locations have to support a contained psychological mystery in which almost anybody around Ellie could be withholding something.
The decision to avoid making the surroundings too distinctive can also help the thriller. An anonymous conference room or ordinary residential street keeps attention on the investigation rather than announcing the real city to viewers. Ottawa frequently has the architectural versatility to play locations other than itself.

Vortex Media Production
“The Copycat Killer” was produced by Vortex Media, with production records also naming NBFSS Films 2025 Inc. The Toronto-based company has an established business in Canadian film and television, including made-for-television productions designed for broadcasters and international distribution.
Bill Marks is credited as producer, while production records also list Kate Fenton during the Ottawa shoot. Jim Donovan directed, William Smith served as cinematographer, Greg Wilson handled production design and Jennifer Stroud was responsible for costume design. Larissa Mair and Colleen Rush were connected with casting during production.
The relatively contained Ottawa shoot would have put particular importance on the production design department. A true crime convention, a killer’s prison environment and the spaces surrounding a homicide investigation need to feel like separate parts of Ellie’s world even when they are being created within the same Canadian production base.
The strongest available record for the filming schedule comes from ACTRA Ottawa. Its production listing gives “Copycat Killer” a May 25 to June 5, 2026 shoot and identifies NBFSS Films 2025 Inc. with Vortex as the production company.
A production listing published around the beginning of filming likewise stated that the project was scheduled to start May 25 in Ottawa. The movie moved into post-production soon afterward and was prepared for an August 29 Lifetime premiere.
That turnaround is quick, but the contained nature of the story makes it workable. “The Copycat Killer” depends more on performance, suspicion and carefully controlled interiors than large-scale location work. Ottawa supplied the practical framework for that kind of production.
Where Are the Exact Locations?
For now, Ottawa is the confirmed answer, but the individual filming properties have not been publicly documented with enough certainty to name them. There is no reliable evidence that Parliament Hill, Rideau Hall, the National Gallery or the Fairmont Chateau Laurier were actually used simply because they are recognizable Ottawa landmarks.
That distinction is worth making in a location article. A movie being filmed in Ottawa does not mean every famous building appearing in a generic city guide became part of the production. Until specific properties are confirmed by the filmmakers, owners or recognizable screen matches, those claims would be guesswork.
What is clear is that “The Copycat Killer” was very much an Ottawa production. The Canadian capital provided the complete working environment for Ellie’s return to the Sigil Slayer case, even though the movie largely keeps its real geography out of the spotlight.
