Umthetho takes a familiar family conflict and places it inside one of the most unforgiving environments imaginable. Nqobile Nunu Khumalo stars as Mbali Dlamini, an idealistic public prosecutor whose belief in the justice system is challenged when she discovers that her older brother Moses, played by Tony Kgoroge, is alive and running a powerful criminal organization from prison. Protecting their younger brother Sphelele forces Mbali to operate between two worlds that should never overlap: the prosecution service she represents and the criminal network she is supposed to fight.
Rather than transplanting the premise of Netflix’s Brazilian series Brotherhood without changing its surroundings, Black Brain Pictures rebuilt the story around South African prisons, policing, family loyalties and organized crime. Johannesburg became the principal backdrop, giving the series a recognizably local identity through its dense inner city, residential neighborhoods and institutional spaces.
Johannesburg, South Africa
Umthetho was filmed primarily in and around Johannesburg in Gauteng, with the city providing both the urban scale and contrasting environments required by Mbali’s story. Secondary production reporting identifies Johannesburg as the central filming area, while the series itself uses the city rather than disguising it as another location.
That distinction matters. Johannesburg is not simply standing in for a generic African metropolis. The South African adaptation shifts the original Brazilian story into a specifically local criminal and judicial context, and the city’s streets, apartment districts and skyline help establish that change immediately.
Gauteng is also one of South Africa’s major film and television production centers. The Gauteng Film Commission maintains a large location database and provides guidance for productions filming throughout the province, while Johannesburg remains one of its busiest production hubs.

Hillbrow and the Johannesburg Skyline
One of the most recognizable visual markers in Umthetho is Hillbrow Tower, which appears in Johannesburg establishing imagery connected with the series. The telecommunications tower rises 269 meters above Hillbrow and has been one of the city’s defining skyline landmarks for decades.
Its presence does useful work beyond telling viewers where they are. Hillbrow’s tightly packed apartment blocks and inner-city streets give the show a harder urban texture than the polished business districts usually used to represent Johannesburg on screen.
The Johannesburg Development Agency describes Hillbrow as one of the city’s best-known inner-city neighborhoods, with the tower precinct extending into the neighboring Berea area. That dense environment fits a crime drama built around surveillance, movement and characters navigating different levels of the same city.

The tower itself appears principally as part of the cityscape. There is no evidence that scenes were filmed inside it, so it is more accurate to describe Hillbrow Tower as an identifiable screen landmark rather than an interior filming venue.
Where Was the Prison in Umthetho Filmed?
The prison is the most important recurring setting in Umthetho, but the real facility used to create it has not been publicly identified.
That is worth making clear because there is an obvious location viewers might assume was used. Mandla N and Black Brain Pictures previously filmed their acclaimed prison drama Lockdown at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg, whose historic Number Four prison, Women’s Jail and surviving cellblocks are frequently made available for screen productions. Constitution Hill itself confirms that Lockdown used the complex.
There is currently no equivalent confirmation that Umthetho returned there.
The new Netflix series contains extensive prison corridors, cells, communal areas and administrative spaces, including the world controlled by Moses and the prison’s Head of Centre, Agnes Khoza, played by Sindi Dlathu. Those sequences could have involved a real correctional property, a converted institutional location, constructed sets or a combination of all three. Netflix and Black Brain Pictures have not yet released enough behind-the-scenes material to settle the question.
For that reason, Constitution Hill should not presently be listed as an Umthetho filming location simply because of Mandla N’s previous connection to the property.
Johannesburg Residential Locations
The crime story does not remain behind prison walls. Mbali’s family life and work require quieter locations that make the Dlaminis feel part of a functioning city rather than permanently trapped inside the criminal world.
Production reporting indicates that residential Johannesburg neighborhoods were also used for filming, although no reliable street addresses or private properties have been publicly identified.
These surroundings create an effective visual counterweight to the prison. Mbali can leave Moses physically, return to ordinary streets and homes, and yet remain caught in the consequences of what is happening inside the institution. Johannesburg’s mixture of suburban neighborhoods and much denser inner-city areas allows those shifts to happen without moving the production to another region.

Until specific properties are confirmed by the production team, attempting to identify Mbali’s house or other residences from exterior similarities would be speculation.
Was Umthetho Filmed at Media City Studios?
Black Brain Pictures is headquartered at Media City Studios, 28 Harley Street in Ferndale, Randburg, making the studio complex another obvious candidate when investigating the series’ production. Black Brain officially states that it operates from Media City and uses the facility’s production infrastructure for its television and streaming work.
However, there is an important distinction between a production company’s base and a confirmed filming location. No public source currently confirms that the prison sets or other scenes in Umthetho were shot at Media City Studios.
It would therefore be premature to add Media City to the confirmed location list. The studio connection does help explain how Black Brain could manage a production of this scale locally, but Johannesburg itself remains the location that can be established with confidence.
When Was Umthetho Filmed?
Available production information points to 2025 as the period in which the first season was made, although exact start and wrap dates have not been publicly announced. The project was originally developed under the working title Brotherhood SA before Netflix unveiled it as Umthetho.
Mandla N shares directing duties with Johnny Barbuzano and Jonathan “Jono” Hall, while Black Brain Pictures produces the series. The cast includes Khumalo, Kgoroge, Given Stuurman, Sindi Dlathu, Sthembiso “SK” Khoza, Lorcia Cooper-Khumalo, Molefi Monaisa and Ernest Msibi. Umthetho premieres on Netflix on August 14, 2026.
What is most effective about the location strategy is that Johannesburg never feels interchangeable. The prison may remain an unidentified production site for now, but the city outside it is unmistakable. Hillbrow’s skyline, ordinary residential environments and the wider Gauteng urban landscape give Umthetho the South African identity necessary to make this adaptation feel like its own story rather than a relocated copy of Brotherhood.
