The Insidious franchise is leaving the Lambert family behind, but it certainly has not finished with The Further. Directed by Jacob Chase, Insidious: Out of the Further introduces Gemma, played by Amelia Eve, a young mother raising her daughter in the house where she grew up. Gemma discovers that she can enter The Further, the purgatorial realm that has haunted this series since 2010. Her ability comes with a dangerous difference: she can bring entities from that world back with her. Lin Shaye also returns as paranormal investigator Elise Rainier, keeping the new chapter connected to the franchise’s past.
Although Gemma’s story unfolds in New England, the sixth Insidious movie was made more than 10,000 miles away in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Production combined purpose-built sets at Docklands Studios Melbourne with location work in Camberwell, Essendon and Kensington, where Melbourne’s older architecture was used to create an American East Coast setting.
Filming Locations
Docklands Studios Melbourne
The production’s indoor base was Docklands Studios Melbourne at 476 Docklands Drive, with the filmmakers specifically occupying Stage 6, the complex’s largest sound stage. Docklands Studios confirmed that the supernatural material for the sixth installment was being created inside the facility while the surrounding Melbourne suburbs handled the New England exteriors.
Stage work is particularly important to an Insidious movie because The Further has never been presented as an ordinary real-world location. It is constructed through darkness, fog, carefully controlled lighting and spaces that feel detached from normal geography.

Lin Shaye provided an unusually revealing glimpse of that process while discussing Out of the Further. She recalled filming inside a large black room at an Australian studio filled with smoke, describing how the combination of darkness and artificial atmosphere became disorienting even before the scene itself began. Official production information separately confirms that Stage 6 housed the movie’s major supernatural work. Taken together, the accounts strongly indicate that at least some of the new Further sequences were created there, although Shaye did not identify the stage by name in her interview.
Camberwell
For the world outside The Further, the filmmakers turned Melbourne into New England. Camberwell, approximately 10 kilometers east of central Melbourne, was one of three suburbs officially confirmed by VicScreen as exterior filming locations.
Camberwell’s older houses and established residential streets make the substitution less unlikely than it might sound. The production deliberately sought Melbourne locations whose architecture could pass for the northeastern United States rather than trying to disguise unmistakably Australian modern buildings. VicScreen described the city’s “moody” architecture as an important part of the visual plan.
A Melbourne resident later reported that a house near their former Camberwell street had been used because it convincingly resembled an American property. That account is anecdotal rather than an official production record, and the address has not been publicly established, so the individual residence should not yet be treated as a verified tourist location.

Essendon
Essendon, northwest of central Melbourne, provided another piece of the fictional New England community. Both the Victorian Government and VicScreen list the suburb among the movie’s confirmed location areas.
No specific Essendon house, street or business has been officially identified, which makes it difficult to match the suburb to a particular sequence without relying on visual guesswork. What is confirmed is that its streetscapes were chosen alongside Camberwell and Kensington specifically to represent New England.
That geographical sleight of hand is important to Out of the Further. Gemma is raising her daughter in the house where she herself grew up, so the real-world locations need a sense of history and permanence. A generic contemporary subdivision would not carry quite the same weight for a horror story built around something returning from a family’s past.

Kensington
The inner-city suburb of Kensington completed the principal group of Melbourne locations. It sits only a short distance from Docklands Studios, making it a particularly practical location for a production moving between controlled stage work and exterior shooting. VicScreen and Variety both confirmed Kensington as one of the areas transformed into New England.
Unlike Camberwell’s more spacious residential character, Kensington offers a denser mixture of period homes, older commercial buildings and narrow neighborhood streets. That gives the movie another version of its fictional American setting without requiring a long company move outside Melbourne.

As with Essendon, no official street-by-street filming list has been released. IMDb identifies Kensington at suburb level, but neither Sony nor the Victorian production agencies have published individual addresses.
Why Did Melbourne Double for New England?
Melbourne was not chosen merely because Australia offered financial incentives. Producer Leigh Whannell, who co-created Insidious with fellow Victorian filmmaker James Wan, grew up in Melbourne and described bringing the franchise back to his hometown as a dream. Jason Blum also praised the city’s crews, production facilities and versatility.
There was a substantial local production footprint behind that decision. VicScreen estimated that the shoot would contribute more than AUD $29 million to Victoria’s economy and generate 513 local jobs, including 205 crew positions. The project received support through the Victorian Screen Rebate and Australia’s federal Location Offset.
The location choice also carries a nice bit of franchise history. Wan and Whannell met while studying film at Melbourne’s RMIT, long before their work on Saw and Insidious turned them into major horror filmmakers. For the sixth movie, a horror series they created in Australia effectively came home while pretending to be America.
When Was Insidious: Out of the Further Filmed?
Principal photography was officially underway in Melbourne by September 29, 2025. The production continued through the Australian spring before wrapping on November 13, 2025, when Chase thanked the cast and crew for their work.
Amelia Eve leads the new ensemble as Gemma, alongside Brandon Perea, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Sam Spruell, Island Austin and Australian actor Laura Gordon. Lin Shaye reprises Elise Rainier, the character who remains the franchise’s most durable connection to The Further.
Insidious: Out of the Further arrives in theaters on August 21, 2026. Melbourne may be almost invisible as itself in the finished film, but that is precisely the achievement of the location work. Camberwell, Essendon and Kensington provide a believable New England surface, while Docklands Studios hides the far less earthly world beneath it.
