Giving up a child for adoption is a decision Cynthia has spent 15 years learning to live with. In Lifetime’s “The Daughter I Gave Away,” that distance suddenly disappears when she learns that the daughter she never raised has vanished from her adoptive home. Cynthia, played by Romina D’Ugo, refuses to remain a concerned stranger on the sidelines and begins looking into the disappearance herself. The deeper she searches, the more unsettling the circumstances surrounding the missing girl become.

Directed by John Bradshaw from a screenplay by Lisa Di Trolio, the 2024 mystery thriller keeps much of its suspense rooted in ordinary homes, streets and neighborhoods rather than spectacular locations. That approach made Hamilton, Ontario, an effective production base. Filming took place in and around the city in February 2024, with James Street North emerging as the clearest publicly identified location.

Hamilton, Ontario

“The Daughter I Gave Away” was filmed in Hamilton, Ontario, with the southern Ontario city providing the residential and urban surroundings for Cynthia’s increasingly desperate search.

Hamilton is particularly useful for television thrillers because it can change its personality from one neighborhood to the next. Its older brick commercial districts, detached residential properties and former industrial areas can appear urban without immediately identifying the city to an international audience. That flexibility suits a movie where the location needs to feel believable and familiar, but should not distract from the mystery.

The production was relatively compact. Available filming reports place principal photography in February 2024, beginning early in the month and wrapping before March. Cinematographer Juan Carlos Montalvo handled the film’s photography, while Patrick Gauthier served as production designer.

Rather than turning Hamilton into a glamorous destination, Bradshaw and his crew make use of its everyday character. Cynthia is following clues through a world of adoptive families, homes and people who may know more than they admit. A recognizable suburban and city environment helps keep that danger close to reality.

James Street North

The most specifically documented filming area is James Street North, one of downtown Hamilton’s best-known commercial corridors. Cast and crew were reported working along the street, where its storefronts, restaurants and older brick buildings supplied exterior material for the Lifetime production.

James North has a look that suits the movie particularly well. Restored heritage buildings sit alongside smaller businesses, apartments and restaurants, giving filmmakers several visual backgrounds within a short distance. A character can move from a commercial street to a quieter block without the production having to relocate across the city.

The movie does not identify James Street North as itself, and no complete scene map has been released linking individual shops to particular moments. That means businesses along the street should not automatically be described as filming locations simply because they appear close to the documented production area.

What can be confirmed is the street itself. The production used its commercial surroundings while creating the wider community in which Cynthia searches for information about her daughter.

The Homes in the Movie

Residential properties carry almost as much weight as the city streets because the disappearance begins with Cynthia learning that her biological daughter is missing from her adoptive household.

Public production records have not identified the exact Hamilton house used as the adoptive family’s residence. The same is true of Cynthia’s home and other private properties appearing throughout the thriller. Those locations appear to have been sourced from Hamilton and its surrounding residential areas, but publishing specific addresses without reliable production confirmation would amount to guesswork.

That secrecy is fairly common for made-for-television productions. Private residences are frequently rented for exterior and interior filming without being promoted afterward as public screen locations.

It also works in the movie’s favor. The homes are meant to look ordinary. Much of the tension comes from Cynthia realizing that something deeply wrong may have happened inside surroundings that initially offer no obvious reason for suspicion.

Why Hamilton Fits the Thriller

Hamilton has become a regular production destination for film and television, particularly projects that need a mixture of older architecture and North American suburban streets without moving between several cities.

For “The Daughter I Gave Away,” there was little need for instantly recognizable landmarks. The camera is more interested in doors Cynthia needs to knock on, streets she has to search and houses where answers may be hidden.

James Street North gives the movie an urban center without making the city overpower the story. Residential Hamilton then provides a quieter visual language for the adoption mystery. The contrast is simple but useful: public places allow Cynthia to investigate, while private spaces become increasingly difficult to trust.

There is also a practical advantage. The film was produced by CMW Autumn Productions, Champlain Media and Reel One Entertainment, companies with extensive experience making Canadian television movies. Ontario’s established crews and production infrastructure allow a project of this scale to move quickly through several practical locations during a short shooting schedule.
