Few movies have made paradise look quite as threatening as The Shallows. Jaume Collet-Serra’s stripped-down 2016 survival thriller follows Nancy Adams, played by Blake Lively, as she travels to an unnamed beach in Mexico that held special meaning for her late mother. What begins as a solitary surfing trip becomes a brutal fight for survival when a great white shark traps Nancy on a rock only a short distance from shore. The movie spends most of its running time within that tiny stretch of water, making the beach almost as important as Nancy herself.

The surprise is that Nancy never went anywhere near Mexico. The Shallows was filmed in Australia, combining the protected beauty of Lord Howe Island in New South Wales with beaches, rainforest, underwater locations and a large studio tank in Queensland. The production ran from October 28, 2015, through January 15, 2016.

Lord Howe Island

The unforgettable beach seen throughout The Shallows is primarily Lord Howe Island, a remote Australian island in the Tasman Sea. Filming-location sources identify Ned’s Beach as the real beach used to create Nancy’s unnamed Mexican surfing spot.

Lord Howe was an unusually ambitious choice. Screen Global reported that The Shallows became the first large-scale movie production to film on the island. Around 100 crew members travelled there for a ten-day shoot, while 45 landing barges were chartered to transport equipment.

That isolation is visible in the finished film. There are no hotels towering behind Nancy, crowded beach bars or busy roads interrupting the horizon. The production needed a place that genuinely looked difficult to reach, and Lord Howe provided that without excessive digital cleanup.

Protecting the island was another challenge. Lord Howe is a UNESCO World Heritage site surrounded by protected marine waters, so the filmmakers had to tightly control their footprint. Crew members even followed designated paths across the sand to prevent hundreds of footprints from ruining both the environment and the untouched appearance required on camera.

The Rock and Buoy Were Built

Two of the movie’s most memorable “locations” did not exist before production arrived.

Nancy spends much of the story stranded on a rocky outcrop, while the buoy farther offshore becomes another crucial refuge. Both structures were purpose-built for filming at Lord Howe Island. The artificial rock was installed roughly 300 metres from the beach, positioned so tides and ocean swell could move naturally around it.

Creating it was far more complicated than dropping a fake boulder into shallow water. Location manager Duncan Jones explained that the structure required a steel frame and approximately 60 tonnes of concrete blocks while still meeting strict environmental requirements. A separate heavy steel buoy was engineered to withstand waves and the physical action required by the script. Nine commercial divers spent three weeks installing the underwater elements.

That practical work is one reason the geography feels convincing. Nancy’s distance from land, the rising tide and the space between the rock, buoy and beach remain understandable throughout the movie.

Village Roadshow Studios

Despite Lord Howe Island’s importance, much of The Shallows was actually filmed at Village Roadshow Studios in Oxenford on Queensland’s Gold Coast. Screen Queensland confirms that the production relied heavily on the studio’s water tank for its more controlled ocean scenes.

The main tank covered nearly 13,000 square feet, allowing the filmmakers to reproduce open-water action without exposing Lively, stunt performers and camera operators to constantly changing ocean conditions.

Water tanks gave Collet-Serra control over lighting, waves, camera movement and repeated stunt takes. Visual-effects work could then connect those carefully staged shots with the real Lord Howe landscapes. The great white shark itself was digitally created, meaning the movie’s central predator was never sharing the water with Lively.

The trick is surprisingly difficult to spot because real island footage is repeatedly used to establish the geography before the action moves into controlled water.

Gold Coast Beaches

The Queensland shoot extended well beyond the studio walls. Screen Queensland’s official production records list Coolangatta, Bilinga and Main Beach among the locations used for The Shallows.

All three lie along or near the Gold Coast, giving the crew immediate access to real surf conditions and coastal scenery while remaining relatively close to Village Roadshow Studios.

Individual scenes have not been officially assigned to each beach, so it would be misleading to claim that one particular sequence belongs definitively to Bilinga or Coolangatta. What is established is that these coastal locations formed part of the production’s wider collection of ocean and beach photography.

Mount Tamborine

Not everything in the movie required sand and surf. Mount Tamborine, in the Gold Coast hinterland, supplied tropical forest scenery. Both Screen Queensland and production databases confirm the area as a filming location.

The lush landscape helped create the journey toward Nancy’s hidden destination, making the fictional Mexican location feel surrounded by dense vegetation rather than sitting beside a developed tourist town.

This is one of those small location choices that sells the larger illusion. Once Nancy reaches Lord Howe Island, viewers have already been encouraged to believe she has travelled somewhere secluded and difficult to access.

Lady Elliot Island

Some of the movie’s underwater photography took the crew farther north to Lady Elliot Island, at the southern end of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

Screen Queensland specifically identifies Lady Elliot Island as the location for underwater sequences.

The island’s clear water and marine environment provided footage that could be incorporated alongside studio photography and visual effects. Again, The Shallows is less a case of one beach providing everything than a carefully assembled illusion built from several Australian environments.

That combination is ultimately what makes the movie’s setting memorable. Ned’s Beach supplies the paradise Nancy wants to find, Lord Howe provides genuine isolation, the Gold Coast contributes additional shorelines, Mount Tamborine brings tropical vegetation, Lady Elliot Island adds underwater imagery, and Village Roadshow Studios makes the dangerous action controllable.

The Mexican beach does not exist on any map. Yet by stitching those Australian locations together so carefully, The Shallows creates one fictional stretch of coastline convincing enough that audiences have been trying to find it ever since.
