“The Whisper Man” begins with a place that looks ordinary enough to offer a grieving family a fresh start. Tom Kennedy, a widowed crime writer, moves with his young son Jake after the death of his wife, hoping that a quieter life might help them recover. Instead, Jake disappears, and Tom is forced back into the orbit of his estranged father, Pete Willis, the retired detective who once helped put away a serial killer known as the Whisper Man. What initially resembles a small-town kidnapping soon reaches into crimes that were supposed to have ended years earlier.
James Ashcroft’s Netflix adaptation of Alex North’s bestselling novel was shot primarily across northern New Jersey. Rather than relying on one town, the production assembled its fictional community from residential streets, historic districts, civic buildings and older properties spread across several municipalities. Cameras were already rolling in Plainfield by April 4, 2025, and filming continued through early June.
Plainfield
Plainfield was one of the earliest and most frequently used locations for “The Whisper Man.” Adam Scott was photographed filming there on April 4, 2025, giving a firm starting point for the production’s New Jersey work. The city later announced additional filming on April 29, May 9 and May 12 through May 16.
Two parts of Plainfield received particular attention: the Downtown Entertainment District and the Van Wyck Brooks Historic District. The latter is especially useful for a psychological thriller because of its large historic homes and mature residential streets. Instead of creating an obviously sinister town, the production could place its disturbing story inside neighborhoods that initially appear established, quiet and reassuring.

Westfield Helped Create the Movie’s Residential World
Westfield was another major stop, particularly for scenes requiring convincing suburban homes and tree-lined streets. Production activity was reported around Willow Avenue, Tappan Avenue and Rockview Avenue, while filming also took place at Wilson School.
A private property on East Dudley Avenue, between Lawrence Avenue and Elm Street, was used during the shoot. Adam Scott, Michelle Monaghan and other members of the production were spotted working around Westfield, with exterior filming turning an otherwise ordinary residential neighborhood into part of the movie’s increasingly uncomfortable setting.
That choice fits the story particularly well. Tom is not supposed to move his son into a place that immediately looks dangerous. The unease works because the streets and houses seem normal until the history surrounding them starts to emerge.
North Plainfield and Scotch Plains Were Also Used
The shoot extended into nearby North Plainfield in Somerset County. Local filming activity was reported there in April, and Somerset County’s own film office now lists “The Whisper Man” among productions filmed in North Plainfield. The borough therefore belongs on the confirmed location list rather than simply being grouped with neighboring Plainfield.

Scotch Plains in Union County also hosted production. Reports from the shoot placed Robert De Niro and Adam Scott at a private residential property in the township, where scenes were filmed in and around the house. Because it is a private home, the exact property is best left out of a visitor-oriented location guide.
Together, Westfield, Plainfield, North Plainfield and Scotch Plains gave Ashcroft several variations on the same basic environment. Their differences are subtle enough that they can convincingly exist within one fictional community on screen.

Montclair’s United Way Building Became a Major Set
One of the longest location setups took place at 60 South Fullerton Avenue in Montclair. The historic property is commonly known as the United Way Building and has long been associated with social-service organizations in the township.
The production prepared the site for weeks before scheduled filming between May 19 and May 27, 2025. Crews were expected to remain afterward for the strike and wrap process, making the Montclair location a considerably more involved shoot than a quick exterior scene.
The building has been identified in location reporting as the screen setting for a community or aging center within the story. Its institutional appearance gives the filmmakers something quite different from the private homes used elsewhere in New Jersey, while still fitting naturally into the architecture of a long-established American town.

Robert De Niro Filmed at Paterson City Hall
Paterson provided one of the easiest “The Whisper Man” locations to identify. Robert De Niro was spotted filming behind Paterson City Hall at 155 Market Street on May 1, 2025. Mayor Andre Sayegh publicly acknowledged the actor’s presence in the city while production was underway.
Paterson City Hall dates to the late 19th century and has a much grander architectural character than most of the movie’s suburban locations. Using the building and its surrounding downtown streets allowed the production to expand the story beyond homes and neighborhood roads without constructing an artificial municipal setting.
For location hunters, it is also one of the film’s most accessible recognizable places. Unlike the private residential properties used elsewhere, City Hall remains a public landmark in downtown Paterson.
Hoboken Joined the New Jersey Shoot
Hoboken is another filming location that is easy to miss in shorter production lists. Crews were spotted there on April 14, working around Bloomfield Street and Garden Street between Eighth and Tenth streets.
The area’s brownstones, narrow streets and older residential architecture offer a different visual character from suburban Westfield or Plainfield. Even relatively brief filming there helped the movie avoid looking as though every street belonged to the same neighborhood.
The wider New Jersey production also employed local background performers for law-enforcement, forensic and emergency-service scenes. SAG-AFTRA casting notices from the period specifically listed interior and exterior New Jersey work through May.
Was The Whisper Man Also Filmed in London?
London is listed as a production location in some industry databases, including Production List, and IMDb also carries London among the film’s reported locations. However, the available evidence for the British portion is much thinner than the documentation surrounding New Jersey.
No specific London street, building, studio or identifiable scene has been reliably disclosed. For that reason, it is safer to describe London as a reported secondary production location rather than claim particular scenes were filmed there. The movie’s principal location work is unquestionably tied to New Jersey.

That distinction also reflects what appears on screen. “The Whisper Man” was adapted from a British novel, but the movie shifts the story into an American setting. Northern New Jersey gave Ashcroft almost everything he needed: old houses, quiet suburban roads, institutional buildings, historic downtowns and wooded surroundings close enough together for a production to move between them efficiently.
The result is a town assembled from many real communities. Plainfield provides historic neighborhoods, Westfield and Scotch Plains supply intimate residential spaces, Montclair adds an institutional setting, Paterson brings civic architecture, and Hoboken contributes denser streets. None of these places is frightening on its own, which is precisely why they work. “The Whisper Man” finds its unease in familiar surroundings and then slowly makes them feel unsafe.
