Better Than the Movies Filming Update: Netflix Movie Prepares for Chicago Shoot

Netflix’s adaptation of Lynn Painter’s bestselling YA romance Better Than the Movies is moving closer to production, with filming expected to take place in Chicago.

Beatrice Kitsos and David Iacono have already been cast as Liz Buxbaum and Wes Bennett, the two central characters from Painter’s popular novel. Current production information points to filming beginning in early September 2026 and continuing into October, although production schedules can still change.

Better Than the Movies Is Heading Into Production

Chicago is set to serve as the production hub for the Netflix movie. Casting activity connected to the project has also appeared in the Chicago market as preparations for principal photography continue.

Specific exterior filming locations have not yet been sufficiently confirmed, so it is too early to identify individual schools, neighborhoods, houses or landmarks that may appear in the movie.

The Chicago shoot does not necessarily mean the story itself is being relocated. Film and television productions frequently use one city to stand in for another, and more should become clear once filming is underway.

Beatrice Kitsos and David Iacono Lead the Cast

Netflix officially selected Beatrice Kitsos to play Liz and David Iacono to play Wes.

The story follows romance-obsessed Liz, who wants the help of her irritating next-door neighbor Wes to get closer to her childhood crush. Her carefully planned romantic scenario becomes increasingly complicated as she starts realizing that her feelings may be pointing somewhere else.
