On a String

On a String is so closely tied to New York that moving the story anywhere else would have changed its personality completely. Isabel Hagen’s feature directorial debut follows Isabel, a Juilliard-trained violist trying to make a living from freelance classical music while still living with her parents. Her work sends her from one strange gig to another, including private parties, weddings and funerals, while a possible New York Philharmonic audition forces her to reconsider how seriously she wants to pursue music. Much of that story comes from Hagen’s own experience as a professional violist in the city, and the filmmakers kept the production equally authentic. On a String was filmed entirely in New York City, with principal photography completed during a compact three-week shoot.

New York City, New York

New York City served as both the setting and the principal filming location for On a String. Production records originally listed the film for an April-May 2023 shoot in New York, while later reporting confirmed that principal photography wrapped in the city.

That decision is particularly important here because New York is not simply used for recognizable exterior shots. The city’s freelance classical music world is effectively part of the story. Isabel moves between auditions, rehearsals and paid performances inside other people’s homes, experiencing the peculiar instability of a musician who has elite conservatory training but no stable orchestra position.

Hagen knows that world personally. She earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in viola performance from The Juilliard School and later worked on Broadway productions and with musicians including Bjork, Max Richter and Vampire Weekend. She has explained that the movie grew from the very specific experiences of working musicians, something that would have been difficult to reproduce convincingly on a generic soundstage somewhere else.

The production itself was relatively small. Hagen has described principal photography as a fast three-week process, which suits the film’s intimate visual approach. Rather than presenting a glossy postcard version of Manhattan, On a String moves through apartments, streets, performance spaces and private gigs in a way that resembles the everyday New York experienced by its characters.

Central Park

Central Park is one of the recognizable New York locations visible in the finished movie. Contemporary reviews specifically note a moment when Isabel stops to take in the beauty of Central Park, giving the film one of its clearer outdoor connections to the city beyond apartments and music venues.

The location also fits Hagen’s larger body of work. Her earlier web series Is a Violist, which helped inspire the feature, followed a fictionalized version of Hagen through unusual freelance jobs around New York and included situations such as musicians performing for a proposal in Central Park. The feature expands that same idea into a longer portrait of someone whose work constantly places her inside other people’s significant moments.

Central Park works differently in On a String than it does in a conventional New York romance. The film is less interested in turning the park into a glamorous backdrop than in showing how someone who spends every day rushing between jobs can occasionally notice the city around her. That understated use of New York is consistent with the film’s small-scale, observational style.

Isabel’s Family Apartment

A large part of On a String takes place in the New York apartment where Isabel still lives with her parents. The family home is crucial to the movie because Isabel’s uncertain professional life is matched by the fact that she has not yet established an independent adult life away from home.

The film’s official synopsis repeatedly describes Isabel as living with her “oddball family” in the heart of New York City. Dylan Baker plays her father, while Karen Blood appears as her mother and Hagen’s real-life brother Oliver Hagen plays Isabel’s brother Owen.

Public production material has not identified the real building or street used for the apartment scenes. That is worth keeping separate from the semi-autobiographical nature of the movie. Hagen drew heavily from her own family and experiences, but there is no reliable confirmation that the production literally filmed inside her real family home.

The apartment nevertheless gives the movie some of its most personal material. Hagen has said that scenes involving Isabel and her father were inspired by her own father’s personality and his ability to listen without immediately judging her. The setting therefore works as more than somewhere for the protagonist to sleep between gigs. It represents the comfortable but slightly stagnant life she is trying to figure out how to move beyond.

Private Homes and Freelance Music Gigs

Some of the most characteristic locations in On a String are the private homes and event spaces where Isabel and her fellow musicians perform. Tribeca’s official description emphasizes that Isabel earns money playing gigs with friends in strangers’ homes, while festival material also mentions weddings, funerals, parties and other events that place the musicians directly inside people’s private lives.

That is a significant part of the movie’s location strategy. Instead of keeping Isabel in concert halls, the film repeatedly puts trained classical musicians in ordinary and sometimes awkward spaces. They become background performers during moments that are enormously important to the people hiring them, even though for the musicians it may simply be another job on the calendar.

Specific addresses for these interiors have not been publicly disclosed, so there is not enough evidence to identify individual houses or event venues confidently. The production’s confirmed New York shoot, however, means those spaces were created within the city rather than being filmed elsewhere and passed off as Manhattan.

Was On a String Filmed at Juilliard or the New York Philharmonic?

Although Juilliard and the New York Philharmonic are important to the story, there is currently no reliable confirmation that principal photography actually took place inside either institution.

Isabel is explicitly a Juilliard graduate, just like Hagen herself, and a major part of the plot begins when her ex-boyfriend tells her about a viola opening with the Philharmonic. That makes Lincoln Center central to the cultural world of the movie, but story references should not automatically be treated as confirmed filming locations.

This distinction is especially important with On a String because its autobiographical details are so convincing. Hagen genuinely attended Juilliard and genuinely worked as a classical musician in New York, but the film mixes her experiences with fictional characters and situations. Unless production records or the filmmakers identify a specific Juilliard or Philharmonic location, it is safer not to add those buildings to the confirmed filming list.

New York Is More Than a Backdrop in On a String

On a String was made on a much smaller scale than the productions that normally turn Manhattan streets into elaborate movie sets, but that modest approach suits the material. The film was shot in New York during a three-week principal photography period, using the city Isabel actually works in rather than attempting to recreate the freelance musician lifestyle somewhere cheaper or less recognizable.

The result is a New York movie without the usual obsession with landmarks. Central Park appears, but much of the city’s presence comes through cramped homes, unpredictable gigs, musicians carrying instruments from one job to another and the constant tension between artistic ambition and paying the bills. For Hagen, who spent years living that life before writing the film, New York is not simply where On a String happens. It is one of the reasons the story exists at all.
