“The Dating App Killer: The Monica White Story” begins with an everyday decision that gradually becomes terrifying. Monica White, a recently divorced mother played by Lela Rochon, decides she is ready to date again after her son leaves for military school. She meets Anthony Robinson online and initially believes she may have found someone worth trusting. What Monica does not yet know is that Robinson will later become known as the “Shopping Cart Killer,” a man convicted of murdering women he met through dating apps. Jarod Joseph plays Robinson in the Lifetime dramatization, directed by Elisabeth Rohm.

The real case unfolded across parts of Pennsylvania, Virginia and the Washington, D.C. region, but the movie crossed the border to create Monica’s world. Production was based in British Columbia, with Vancouver serving as the overall production center and Maple Ridge providing an unusually large number of identifiable locations. The movie filmed there under its working title, “Shopping Cart Killer.”

Maple Ridge, British Columbia

Maple Ridge provides the most detailed filming trail for the Lifetime movie. The City of Maple Ridge now lists “Shopping Cart Killer” among its 2025 productions and confirms that crews worked there from September 27 through October 8, 2025. Unlike many television movies where only a city can be established, the municipality has published a substantial list of individual businesses, public facilities and neighborhoods used during the shoot.

The production moved between the Haney, Hammond and Albion areas, giving the filmmakers residential streets, shopping areas, restaurants and larger community facilities within the same city. That flexibility was particularly useful for a true-crime drama that needs ordinary places to become unsettling. Monica’s story is not built around glamorous landmarks. It depends on homes, restaurants, meeting places and public spaces where someone dangerous can initially appear perfectly normal.

Albion Fairgrounds and Planet Ice

Among the larger locations was Albion Fairgrounds at 23588 Jim Robson Way. The property contains barns, exhibition buildings, open grounds and event spaces, giving a production several possible looks within one complex. The City of Maple Ridge specifically identifies the fairgrounds as a “Shopping Cart Killer” filming site.

Nearby Planet Ice Maple Ridge was also used. The arena sits within the same Albion recreational area and operates alongside the fairgrounds and Golden Ears Winter Club. No public scene breakdown has revealed exactly what Albion Fairgrounds or Planet Ice represents in the finished movie, so attaching either property to a particular fictional location would be speculation.

ValleyFair Mall and Downtown Maple Ridge

Several commercial locations helped build the everyday world surrounding Monica. ValleyFair Mall on Lougheed Highway appears on Maple Ridge’s official production list, alongside a collection of downtown businesses.

Those businesses include Chameleon Restaurant at 11965 224 Street, Pho Song at 22334 Lougheed Highway, Big Feast Bistro, Maple Market, and The Wolf Bar. The variety is notable because it suggests the movie was not created primarily on soundstages. Restaurants and retail spaces were repeatedly incorporated into the production’s version of an American community.

Chameleon, with its modern restaurant and lounge interior, would give the filmmakers a very different atmosphere from Pho Song or Big Feast Bistro. However, Maple Ridge’s records do not identify which scenes belong to which restaurant. They should therefore be treated as confirmed filming locations without assuming that every business appears under its real name on screen.

St. John the Divine

Another intriguing location is St. John the Divine Anglican Church at 21299 River Road. The historic church is one of the oldest surviving Anglican church properties in the region and appears on the city’s official “Shopping Cart Killer” location list.

The production has not said whether the church represents itself, another religious institution or an entirely different interior. Its traditional wooden architecture gives it a visual identity that is quite different from the movie’s restaurants and retail locations, adding another layer to the range of Maple Ridge properties used during filming.

Colleen Findlay Place

Colleen Findlay Place at 11601 Laity Street also hosted production. The community facility is another location confirmed directly by Maple Ridge rather than inferred from the finished film.

As with several other sites, there is no reliable public match between the property and a specific scene. That matters in a true-crime production because it would be easy to assume that a real building represented a police station, hospital or other institution simply based on its appearance. The available evidence only confirms that the crew filmed there.

Hammond and Haney

The production also spread into the Hammond and Haney communities of Maple Ridge. These neighborhoods provided the residential and street-level environments needed for a story that spends considerable time around Monica’s home life and the ordinary places she visits while becoming increasingly suspicious of Anthony.

No private residential addresses have been publicly connected to Monica’s house. That is a useful boundary to maintain. The neighborhoods themselves are confirmed, but individual homes should not be identified from visual resemblance alone.

Vancouver Production Base

The larger production was officially registered in Vancouver. UBCP/ACTRA production records listed “Shopping Cart Killer” as a Vancouver feature with work beginning on September 22, 2025. Rohm was still shooting on October 10, when she posted that the production had one day remaining, placing the final wrap around the following day.

Rohm had also shared location-scouting material from Vancouver before cameras rolled. The decision makes sense for a production needing to recreate several American environments without making the city itself recognizable. Metro Vancouver’s mix of suburban homes, motels, commercial strips and wooded communities can be framed to resemble parts of the eastern United States without relying on famous Canadian landmarks.

The Dating App Killer Cast

Lela Rochon stars as Monica White and also serves as an executive producer. Rochon remains best known for playing Robin Stokes in “Waiting to Exhale,” alongside later work including “Gang Related” and “Any Given Sunday.”

Jarod Joseph plays Anthony Robinson. Joseph is particularly recognizable as Nathan Miller from “The 100” and has also appeared in “Sight Unseen,” “Once Upon a Time,” “Rogue” and “Fringe.”

The supporting cast includes Princess Davis as Tonita, Shanna Giannozio as Beth Redmond, Trezzo Mahoro as Isaiah White, Katrina Reynolds as Laila, Spencer Driver as Rayleigh, Shyinne Anastacio as Beverley, and Spencer Graham as Casey. Davis, who previously appeared in Hallmark’s “Holiday Road,” was among the cast members specifically named by Maple Ridge in its record of the local shoot.

What makes the filming map especially useful here is how ordinary most of these places are. “The Dating App Killer: The Monica White Story” is based on a case in which danger entered Monica’s life through something as routine as online dating. Maple Ridge’s restaurants, shopping centers, neighborhoods and community buildings preserve that sense of normality. The locations do not announce that a crime story is coming, which is exactly why they suit one so well.
