Few movies have made paradise look quite as threatening as The Shallows. Jaume Collet-Serra’s stripped-down 2016 survival thriller follows Nancy Adams, played by Blake Lively, as she travels to an unnamed beach in Mexico that held special meaning for her late mother. What begins as a solitary surfing trip becomes a brutal fight for survival…

Netflix’s My Brilliant Career returns to Miles Franklin’s celebrated story without trying to recreate Gillian Armstrong’s 1979 film shot for shot. Sybylla wants to become a writer, even…

Anthony Bourdain eventually became a chef, writer and traveler who seemed incapable of staying in one place for long, but Tony is interested in the period before all of that. 2 Hearts looks, at first, like two separate romances unfolding at different points in time. Lance Hool’s romantic drama gradually reveals why those…
HBO’s Lanterns takes one of DC’s most cosmic concepts and deliberately brings it down to Earth. Instead of beginning with enormous intergalactic battles, the eight-episode series pairs veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan with newly recruited John Stewart and drops them into an investigation surrounding a murder in America’s heartland. Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre lead…
A marriage that once felt completely secure becomes the most frightening uncertainty in The Him I Knew. The Lifetime psychological thriller follows Melony and Luke Taylor, a married couple whose seemingly settled life is shattered when they survive a violent attack inside their home. The physical danger passes, but something more disturbing takes its place.…
David Robert Mitchell’s The End of Oak Street begins with an aggressively ordinary American neighborhood. Greg and Denise Platt are raising their children, Audrey and Brian, in the kind of quiet suburb where garages, driveways and trimmed lawns hardly seem capable of hiding anything extraordinary. Then a mysterious cosmic event tears Oak Street away from…
